Parkwood, one of the older, more established neighbourhoods of the bustling metropolitan, is tucked between Rosebank and Saxonwold in the green northern suburbs of Johannesburg. With its big double-storey homes and large properties, Parkwood is reminiscent of Houghton.
You’re in a great location when staying in Parkwood because it’s practically in the middle of what makes Johannesburg buzz. The suburb is conveniently located between Oxford Road and Jan Smuts Avenue, giving you easy access to almost anywhere in the north of Johannesburg, but it still manages to maintain a remarkable sense of peace and quiet.
A short distance away is Rosebank, which has a plethora of stores, boutiques, cinemas, and restaurants in addition to the weekly Sunday Rooftop Market. The inviting villages of Greenside, Norwood, and Parkhurst, with their pavement culture and high streets that offer a number of antique shops, trendy cafés, and popular restaurants, make for an excellent evening and lunchtime entertainment. Parkwood is also conveniently close to both Sandton and Hyde Park with their mixture of upmarket shops and quirky boutiques.
Zoo Lake, a popular open park that borders the charming suburb of Parkview, is especially popular on weekends for dog walkers. Combining a stroll with the regular Artists under the Sun art market is a great way to spend a portion of the weekend. A visit to the Zoo, a large 54-hectare park in the centre of Parktown with plenty of trees and lovely footpaths, is a must if you have kids or even if you don’t.
