The year 2019 was symbolic as it commemorated 400 years since the first enslaved Africans touched down in Jamestown, in the English colony of Virginia in America. After a crazy almost two years of this pandemic, it is anticipated that over 150,000 individuals will be traveling at the end of 2021 and will truly be beyond the return experience to remember. What To Know Before Planning A Trip To Ghana

Akan is the most popular language here in Ghana, while English is the second most popular language down here. Most locals here might not be fluent in English, but they may understand anything you ask them. For the capital, Accra or Kumasi you can surely find your way around with English.

Is Ghana Expensive? How Much Can It Cost?

I cannot estimate the cost of traveling to Ghana because every traveler has different needs. Your travel budget in Ghana may be more or lower than that of other tourists. However, I can estimate your daily spending for your trip to Ghana.

Depending on where you want to stay while traveling to Ghana, it may be more affordable than usual. As I mentioned previously, traveling in Accra or Kumasi can be somewhat pricey, but it won’t alter your vacation preferences (budget travelers).

If you travel on a budget you can survive on around USD 20 per day or even less, depending on what you will be doing during the day or where you will eat. But if you are doing expensive restaurants or fine dining settings with higher star hotels or accommodations, then you can be spending about USD 50 a day on food.

Ghana has a different currency which is Cedi (this is the sign of the cedi). When you are to convert to dollars, 10 cedi is USD 1. You should change or convert your money into Cedi, some people may not accept or even know what a dollar is. Every bank or forex can convert it for you but is best you ask someone for the best converting offer in town. So I recommend you convert your money to Cedi as the conversion rate is lower.

Ghana Entry Requirements

Kotoka International Airport and Kumasi International Airport are Ghana’s two main international airports. Most tourists choose to fly into Kotoka International Airport when traveling to Accra. A health declaration form must be submitted online by all visitors no later than three days before their trip to Ghana.

If you’re fully vaccinated:

All travelers aged 18 years and over are required to provide evidence of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 at the point of embarkation and upon arrival in Ghana.
There is no pre-travel or on-arrival testing requirement if you are fully vaccinated. Non-resident unvaccinated travelers will not be granted entry into Ghana. Ground staff at your departure airport will not allow you to travel.

You will need to take the following steps in addition to completion of the online health declaration form, set out in more detail below:

Take a pre-travel PCR test; load that onto the Trusted Travel Scheme website and generate a Travel Code; pay for an on-arrival test, and be subject to vaccination on arrival. Travel smart Tip: Carrying paper copies of everything will make your journey through the airport more straightforward.
You will be required to present a negative PCR test that was taken not more than 48 hours before the start of your journey, both to the airline before embarkation, and upon arrival.
Complete additional health declaration forms online before arrival
Do an additional antigen test on arrival in Ghana and will be offered vaccination upon arrival.

Visa Requirement

To enter Ghana, you need a visa. The cost of a single entry visa for a holder of a UK passport is £60. For information and to submit an online application, go to the Ghana High Commission website. A single entrance visa for people with US passports costs $60. For further information, go visit the Ghana Embassy in Washington, DC’s website. Holders of an ECOWAS passport—including my fellow Nigerians—can visit Ghana without a visa for up to three months.

NB: Your passport should be valid for a minimum period of 6 months from the date of entry into Ghana.

Dual Nationality

Ghana accepts dual citizenship. Dual citizens of Ghana and the United Kingdom should register with the Interior Ministry in Ghana and obtain a Dual Nationality Card in order to avoid paying visa fees. A visa is not necessary if this card is produced at the point of entry into Ghana.

Yellow Fever Certificate Requirements

Transportation System In Ghana

Low-cost planes, rental vehicles, public minibusses (Trotro), taxis, internet taxis (Uber and Bolt), and buses are just a few of the available transportation options in Ghana. Ghana is normally a fairly easy and affordable place to travel.

Budget Airlines

For tourists, flying within Ghana is not expensive, but it might be for locals. Many long-distance buses are more pleasant than the majority of domestic flights. However, only the major cities—Accra, Kumasi, Cape Coast, Takoradi, Ho, Tamale, and Sunyani—can be reached by flight in Ghana. You just have to select a location and the driver will take you to your destination. Online taxis charge according to the distance, less amount the app can charge is USD 1.

Minibusses (Trotro)

Using a Trotro to travel around might be a good idea if your budget is restricted. You ride in a shared minibus or van that travels between locations with other passengers, advise the driver where you want to get out, and pay when you get there. They occasionally also pay the fare just before the vehicle begins to move. The other riders would be happy to assist you in reaching your goal. The cost varies depending on the distance; remember to ask the driver’s conductor (locals refer to them as “Mate”) for the cost or to obtain your change.

Buses In Ghana

Traditional Taxis

Taxi drivers in Ghana generally don’t have meters, so ask the price before you get in and also ask the driver if he can take you to where you going. Some drivers don’t know everywhere. Local rides within a city or town should cost between $1 – $2. It will be a bit more expensive to hail cabs from bus stations or tourist areas.

I would advise you to visit Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle while you are there because they both had key roles in the Transatlantic Slave Trade. If you have the time, drive the 20 minutes between Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle. Over 400 years ago, the first slave ship from Ghana’s coast sailed for the Americas. Each colonizing nation, including the Portuguese, British, Dutch, French, Germans, Danes, and Swedes, established its own fort or castle in Ghana.

You will be given a guided tour of Cape Coast Castle where you can see the dungeons where enslaved Africans were kept for up to three months before being transported over the Atlantic to the New World.
