The Earth, its history, future, life, and the life forms that live and have lived on it are all celebrated at the Durban Natural Science Museum. The earth’s earthly home is a 2200m2 interior of Durban City Hall (pictured), which, while historic in its own right – stunning with its modern renaissance design since 1910 – never seems to attract as much attention as the earth’s architecture, which dates back 4.55 billion years.
This museum, which opened in 1887, is the most popular of its sort in Southern Africa, with an average of 295 000 visitors per year. Among the visible skeletons of extinct animals is the educational backbone of budding scientists. A visit gives a future bright spark the chance to meet a former Dodo and a current full-scale adult specimen the chance to feel insignificant next to a life-size reproduction of the Tyrannosaurus-Rex dinosaur.

The Museum Research Centre also has Africa’s third largest collection of birds, which is open to the public. Schools and the general public can take tours of the facility. School visits are provided at 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, and at 12.30 p.m. on Fridays for the general public.
