People think there is no ghost towns in Africa, but people travel to Africa just to see this ghost town in Namibia.
Kolmanskop is an old, abandoned desolate town. It is located 10km inland from the port town of Luderitz. This eerie town is the remnants of a once rich vibrant area. Kolmanskop was considered one of the richest towns in the Southwest African region. With its abundance in a diamond. Many prospectors and wide-eyed miners came here to make money from its rich diamond laden lands.
After a while, the diamond reserve began to diminish and this forced the town folk to migrate elsewhere for better prospects. Some decades passed, and it was gradually overrun by the sands from the desert. It was finally abandoned in 1956. They covered most of the town and left it deserted. The dunes that overrun the town brought it to a standstill. Giving it that timeless, monumental appearance. To most who visited the place, it felt like a dead place, with very little sign of life remaining in the area.
If you’re the type who goes berserk by old historical sites, this place would be a gold mine. With its old Germanic architecture, the ghost town gives people a sense of how life was lived back in the day. You can feel the echoes of this once beautiful till this day.
Folks looking to catch a glimpse of this place would have to book a tour guide, obtain a permit due to its location in the restricted area of the Namib desert and get ready for some of the best hiking experiences. This place is also popular to photographers because it set desert sands reclaiming the town.
