Konongo, also known as Konongo-Odumase, is a vibrant mining community nestled in the Ashanti region of Ghana. This town holds a significant role as the capital of the Asante Akim Central Municipal. With a settlement population of approximately 41,238 people as of 2012, Konongo bustles with activity and is a vital hub in the region’s economy.

What sets Konongo apart is its involvement in both gold bar mining and manganese mining. These industries play a pivotal role in sustaining the town’s economy and providing livelihoods for its residents. Located about 53 kilometres (33 miles) away from Kumasi, the bustling Ashanti capital, Konongo offers a contrast to the urban hustle and bustle, surrounded by the natural beauty and resources that make it a notable mining centre in Ghana.

Konongo, a vibrant gold mining town, has a rich history dating back several decades, especially before the 1950s. It once held the prestigious title of being the commercial capital of the Kumasi East Council, later evolving into the Asante-Akyem District. The presence of British-owned gold mines in the region served as a magnet, drawing people from various nationalities across the West African Sub-Region and different ethnic groups.

The Konongo Gold Mine, now suspended, operated as an open pit mine in Ashanti, primarily producing bullion gold bars. Production data for gold spanning six years from 1984 to 1992 reveals its significant role in the industry. Signature Metals Ltd was the controlling owner during this period.

Furthermore, Konongo boasts substantial manganese ore deposits, estimated at over 1.7 million metric tonnes, located near Odumase in Ashanti. These deposits are notable for their high manganese content, measuring at 19.7%. This mineral wealth has contributed to the town’s economic significance and its enduring reputation as a historically lively hub in the heart of Ghana’s gold and mining industry.

Konongo-Odumase, the site of Konongo-Odumase Senior High School, has been home to this coeducational second-cycle institution since its official inauguration on February 23, 1953. Over the decades, it has played a crucial role in providing quality education to countless students.

However, in December 2017, tragedy struck when a massive fire erupted in the school’s boys’ dormitory, leaving over 100 students displaced. This devastating incident not only disrupted the students’ lives but also highlighted the importance of fire safety measures in educational institutions.

The Konongo-Odumase community and the school’s administration rallied together to support the affected students, providing shelter, clothing, and emotional assistance during this challenging period. The incident served as a wake-up call for improved safety protocols within schools nationwide, emphasizing the need for fire prevention and response strategies.

Despite the setback, Konongo-Odumase Senior High School remains committed to its mission of nurturing young minds and continues to be a symbol of resilience and determination in the face of adversity.
