Mount Afadja is located in the Hohoe area of the Volta region, in the little community of Liati Wote. Mount Afadja, Ghana’s tallest mountain and highest point at 2,904 feet above sea level, is arguably the most talked-about mountain in the country. Because the mountain is close to the Ghana-Togo border, the top of the peak provides views of sections of Togo.
While Mount Afadja is the official name, the Ewe people who dominate the region call it Afadjato, with the suffix ‘to’ meaning’mountain,’ therefore Afadjato simply means Afadja Mountain.
Origin of the name
The name came about when the Liati Wote people, who live just a few kilometers beneath the mountain, initially established in the area and recognized the peak was shaped like a mound for planting water yam, according to their oral history. People began to refer to the mountain as Afadja, an aboriginal word for water yam. As the mountain’s fame grew and word of its existence spread, the name was changed to Afadja-to.

Mount Afadjato, one of West Africa’s highest mountains, offers a four- to six-hour climb, and the area around the Volta contains several minor mountains with amazing vistas and fresh air, as well as little in the way of modern-day disturbance, making it a hiking highlight.
Where is Mount Afadjato located?
The mountain is located in the Agumatsa Range near the villages of Gbledi and Liati Wote, in the Volta Region of Ghana at the border with Togo.

Mount Afadja isn’t the only thing to see in Liati Wote; the town is also home to two waterfalls: the Tagbo Falls and the Wli Waterfalls, the latter of which is the highest waterfall in West Africa and is only a few meters from Mount Afadja.
