When it comes to wildlife tourism, Ghana isn’t one of the most popular destinations on the planet. Despite this, the country has some fantastic wildlife tourism attractions that attract millions of visitors each year from all walks of life. One such location is the Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary in Tafi Atome, Ghana’s Volta region.
The people of Tafi Atome coexist alongside the Mona and Patas monkeys, two uncommon monkey species. The existence of monkeys in the village’s forests was not merely a coincidence or a work of nature, as some would have it. It was a purposefully carried out project in 1993 under the supervision of the Peace Corps in order to develop multi-faceted community-based ecotourism while also protecting rare monkey species. Prior to the initiative, the monkeys lived in the tropical jungle around the settlement, far from the town and with no human contact.
The monkeys that live in a small forest on the outskirts of town are harmless and friendly to humans, and can be seen periodically playing in the trees of the forest and along the side of the road leading into town.
It has become one of the most popular tourist spots in the Volta Region over the last two decades, with hundreds of visitors flocking to the town to view these uncommon monkeys that gladly live alongside humans and share ties with them.
All a tourist has to do is buy a banana and show it to the monkeys to entice them to come down from their trees. The monkeys rush down the trees towards the tourists at the sight of bananas, hoping to be handed the fruit.
Tafi Atome is one of the most well-known examples of community-based ecotourism’s potential. If you ever find yourself in the Volta region, you should definitely pay a visit to the Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary.
