AAUW Fellowships Current Funding Opportunities – Fellowships & Grants

These are AAUW Fellowships current funding opportunities

American Fellowships

When the American Fellowship program was established in 1888, women were discouraged from going to school. The oldest non-institutional source of graduate funding for women in the United States, it is the largest fellowship program offered by AAUW. AAUW American Fellowships provide financial assistance to female academics working on their dissertations, postdoctoral research projects, or manuscript preparation for eight weeks. Candidates must be citizens or legal residents of the United States. The quality and uniqueness of the project concept and the candidate’s commitment to actively assisting women and girls through service in their communities, professions, or fields of study are all taken into consideration when evaluating candidates.

Funding: $8,000–$50,000
Opens: August 1
Deadline: November 1

Career Development Grants

Women with bachelor’s degrees who want to improve in their current careers, change fields or enter the workforce again in the fields of education, health and medical sciences, science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), or social sciences can apply for Career Development Grants. Women of colour and women pursuing their first graduate degree or certifications in atypical fields are given priority consideration. Candidates must be citizens or legal residents of the United States whose most recent degree was earned prior to June 30, 2015. There are funds available for dependent care, local transportation, books, supplies, tuition, fees, and other expenses.

In order to provide “encouragement” cash to AAUW members looking to renew or resume academic work for credit toward career or employment progress, the organization created Career Development Grants in 1972.

Grants are now available to help pay for coursework that goes beyond a bachelor’s degree, such as a master’s, second bachelor’s, certification program, or specialized training in a technical or professional sector. The U.S. Department of Education requires that coursework be completed at an accredited two- or four-year college or university within the country, as well as at a technical school that is fully authorized or accredited. Doctoral-level work is not eligible for funding.

Funding: $2,000–$20,000
Opens: August 1
Deadline: November 15

Community Action Grants

Community Action Grants provide funding for creative programs that advance education and for women and girls to individuals, AAUW branches, AAUW state organizations, as well as community-based nonprofits. AAUW has supported hundreds of communities across the country since 1972.

Funding:
$3,000-$10,000
Opens: August 1
Deadline: December 1

AAUW International Fellowships

Women who are not nationals or lawful permanent residents of the United States are given international fellowships to pursue full-time study or research there. Graduate and postgraduate study at authorized institutions in the United States is funded. By the application deadline, applicants had to have completed coursework equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree and submitted applications to the schools they intended to attend. The second year of eligibility is available for up to five international master’s/first professional degree fellowships; fellows will be given information on how to apply for this competitive program.

Academic excellence and a clear commitment to supporting women and girls are considered when choosing recipients. Recipients go back to their native nations and rise to positions of leadership in business, politics, academia, community activism, the arts, and sciences.

Funding: $20,000–$50,000
Opens: August 1
Deadline: November 15

International Project Grants

The commitment to empowering women and girls in their home countries does not end when AAUW International Fellows complete their education in the United States, and neither does their need for financial assistance. AAUW awards grants to International Fellowship alumnae who have returned home after successfully completing the course of study for which they received funding in order to foster long-lasting support across the world. Alumni are able to build on their academic work and carry out community-based projects that will enhance the lives of women and girls thanks to these grants.

Alumni of our international fellowships and project grants have taken on the problems of women’s equity head-on. These women support the weakest and most resilient members of their communities by securing property rights for widows and constructing safe hearths for cassava cultivation.

Funding: $5,000–$7,000
Opens: August 1
Deadline: November 1

Research Publication Grants in Engineering, Medicine and Science

Promotions and tenure in engineering, medicine, and science depend on having a strong publication record. Women may find it challenging to get the time and institutional support necessary to publish their research, however, due to pervasive gender preconceptions and bias in these professions. These grants support research initiatives that result in scholarly publications, assisting women in overcoming these obstacles.

They are available to female researchers with a doctorate in engineering, medicine, or the physical or biological sciences who are engaged in basic research in one of those areas. The grantee is required to publish their work in a scholarly journal and be listed as one of the primary authors.

Funding: $10,000–$35,000
Opens: August 1
Deadline: December 1

Selected Professions Fellowships

Particular Professions Women who intend to enrol full-time in one of the selected degree programs where women’s involvement has historically been low during the fellowship year at authorized U.S. schools are given fellowships. Candidates must be citizens or legal residents of the United States.

The Max C. Fleischmann Foundation donated $25,000 to start these fellowships in 1970. They initially focused on removing barriers for women in the traditionally male-dominated professions of law and medicine. However, as the need for a technologically skilled workforce increased without equal representation by women, the focus gradually broadened to include science and technology.

Selected Professions Fellowships are awarded for the following master’s programs:

  • Architecture.
  • Computer/information sciences.
  • Engineering.
  • Mathematics/statistics.

Fellowships in the following degree programs are restricted to women of colour, who have been underrepresented in these fields:

  • Master’s in business administration.
  • Law.
  • Doctorate in medicine.

Funding: $20,000
Opens: August 1
Deadline: December 1
