History of Bertrams
After a portion of the property Doornfontein was sold, the suburb was built on one of the first farms on the Witwatersrand. The area bears Robertson Fuller Bertrams’ name, a local developer. It was first known as Bertramstown and declared a suburb on August 16, 1889. By the 1930s, Bertrams served a “working class populace that was racially diverse.” However, some of the black people who were transported to Orlando in the 1930s were black Bertrams residents. Additionally evacuated in order to create a white working-class housing design were Indians and people of colour. Before the racial segregation laws of apartheid were abolished in 1991, Bertrams started to desegregate.
