About Lonehill, Johannesburg – South Africa

Lonehill is a suburb north of Johannesburg, South Africa. It is located in Region E. Lonehill is in the Gauteng province and is a suburb of Sandton. Lonehill is an upmarket area mostly composed of residential properties.

It is obvious that Lonehill, which is located immediately north of Witkoppen Road and has easy access to William Nicol Drive and the N1, must have been called after a lone hill nearby. Few Jo’burgers are aware that Lonehill is home to a nature reserve—a slice of nature in the middle of the concrete jungle—aside from the fact that it is one of the city’s newest suburbs, situated as it is on the outskirts of Bryanston and flooded with yuppies during the 1990s.

One of the few hills in this area of Johannesburg, which is 28 kilometres from the city centre, is the lone Lonehill koppie. It may be solitary, but the Lonehill Nature Reserve contains a really attractive koppie that is bordered by rocky veld, little streams, and plants. Hikers and people looking for a place to picnic on the weekends particularly appreciate the walk down to a small dam known as Lonehill Loch.

Three Stone Age furnaces that were discovered during 1960s excavations and are located in the veld directly below the koppie add to the site’s noteworthy features. It’s interesting to note that after excavation, they were once more covered up because there was no money to develop the property.

While we’re talking about fascinating, you can see the Kyalami Castle, popularly referred to as Michael Jackson’s castle due to the star’s interest in the building a few years ago, across the eastern horizon from Lonehill’s koppie. Although it changed ownership in 2008 and is currently owned by the Church of Scientology, the Arthurian-style castle is praised as one of the “real oddities” of the city.
