Berea, Gauteng – South Africa

Berea is a Johannesburg inner-city neighbourhood in the Gauteng province of South Africa. It is located east of the Johannesburg CBD. It’s in the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality’s Region F.

To the east and west, it is sandwiched between Yeoville and Hillbrow. It is well-known for its high crime rates and dense population. Barnato Park High School is a local high school.

The area is built on the site of a former Witwatersrand farm known as Doornfontein. It was founded in 1893 and is named after the Durban suburb of Berea.

Johannesburg’s first residential city improvement area is located in a tiny core part of Berea (CID). Crime in Berea has decreased by 70 to 80 percent since mid-2006. The 2198 Boys from Berea (Prince Mnaphi, also known as Pringle Maarbiter, Fortune Mkhwebu, also known as Fox, and Warren Mnguni, also known as Picasso) represent Berea, Gauteng with their Extraordinary street style apparel line.
