Crown Mines Golf Club – Johannesburg

South Africa mines its gold in the region known as Johannesburg, sometimes known as “Egoli” or “The Heart of Gold.” In fact, this region is home to some of the biggest gold reserves in the world. And in the midst of all the opulence sits Crown Mine Golf Club. The 100-year-old club, which was entirely rebuilt between 1970 and 1976, continues to stand tall in the minds and hearts of its devoted members as well as in the annals of history. Currently, the club is next to Gold Reef City, a theme park with a variety of attractions, and as recently as 2010, a new neighbour built into the area, almost directly across the street: The FNB Stadium, Soccer City.

The beautifully maintained course is a true pleasure to play on. 11 of the 18 holes have water hazards that will keep you on your toes, and the surface is kept in excellent condition. The architects had plenty of room to work with because the par 72 course was approximately 7000 meters long, and they did indeed create a fantastic course.

The fact that the play is free and available to the public will please visitors. To minimize disappointment, it is strongly advised that you reserve your lodging in Johannesburg and your tee-off times in advance. A driving range, putting green, pro shop, caddies, and halfway house are available as amenities.

Now the Crown Mines Golf Club has closed and is no longer operating. The information above is for historical interest only.
