In the northern part of Johannesburg, between the neighbourhoods of Victory Park, Blairgowrie, and Craighall Park, is a sizable green space known as Delta Park. The park has always been well-liked by locals and their dogs, but at one point it received some negative attention and was seen as only being safe to visit in groups. However, there are plenty of reasons to visit this part of the world thanks to the magnificent cycle lanes that are available and the Delta Users Committee’s frequent treks through the park.
In addition to being frequently used for events, Delta Park is also part of Trefoil Park, a girl scout and guiding camp that comes alive during the academic year. This is also where the Delta Environmental Centre is based; it provides advice and instruction on environmental issues. They are an independent non-profit organization that provides schoolchildren with a range of classes and curriculum-based programs with the goal of empowering and assisting them in leading greener lifestyles. They rent out a function space and auditorium that are ideal for workshops.
The park itself contains the 7.5-acre Florence Bloom Bird Refuge, which is the oldest bird sanctuary in the city despite having fallen into disrepair and neglect. However, recent financial support enabled re-fencing, the construction of two hides, and a campaign to combat invasive vegetation. Up to 250 different bird species can be spotted here, including a variety of water birds, the occasional kingfisher (if you’re very quiet), bishops, weavers, and owls.
The park is actively working to draw owls, and its website offers diagrammatic instructions for building your own owl box. There is a recycling centre as well.
