Craighall Park, Johannesburg – South Africa

One of Sandton’s upscale northern neighbourhoods, Craighall Park is located in Johannesburg. Sandton is a group of lush communities that stretches across the western side of the city between Parkhurst and the massive malls of Sandton’s Central Business District. As one of the city’s older neighbourhoods, Craighall Park’s sizable homes and expansive gardens, which give the area a calm, green feel despite being close to Jan Smuts Avenue, are a remnant of a time when plots, rather than stands, were for sale in this area.

Craighall Park is ideally situated for navigating the city because it is close to the M1 and is situated between Beyers Naude Drive and Jan Smuts Avenue, two main thoroughfares in Johannesburg’s northern regions that make it easy to get from point A to a point despite traffic.

On a Tuesday night, locals congregate just under the escalators at the nearby Hyde Park shopping centre to see art movies. When Jo’burgers serves breakfast in style on a weekend morning, business is still brisk. And for those looking to play a round of golf, both the Sandton Sports Club and the River Club golf course are nearby. Without visiting Sandton City, the vibrant hub of fashion, coffee cafes, and various stores, a visit to Johannesburg’s northern suburbs is incomplete.

Things To Do In Area (Craighall Park)

Florence Bloom Bird Sanctuary

In the centre of Johannesburg, among one of Gauteng’s largest and most prized natural beauties, Delta Park, is where you’ll find the Florence Bloom Bird Sanctuary. Along with three dams, Delta Park includes forested and grassy areas. Through the many pathways that crisscross its 104 hectares, this combination results in an oasis that is a delight to explore.

The Bloom brothers founded the bird sanctuary in these surroundings in 1975, making it the oldest in this South African province. More than 250 different bird species have been identified and recorded since it was founded. Numerous water species, including ducks, moorhens, and coots, can be found in the sanctuary because of its two dams.

The different species of birds can be observed peacefully building nests, feeding their young, foraging for food, and entertaining onlookers by singing from hides that overlook the dams. Additionally, the Florence Bloom Bird Sanctuary is home to a few pretty unique species. These include the Madagascar cuckoo and the Ayres hawk-eagle.
