Devil’s Peak, City Bowl – Cape Town

Between Vredehoek and Table Mountain National Park, the Devil’s Peak estate is located on the slopes just above the city’s core. The suburb is not zoned for flats, townhouses, or multi-dwelling units and, as a result, is primarily made up of smaller homes, certainly smaller than Vredehoek. Residents also zealously guard the area, viewing Devil’s Peak as a sensitive area that will not benefit from further development.

One of Cape Town’s most notable landmarks, Devil’s Peak is a part of the city’s rocky background. When viewing Table Mountain from the harbour, the unique peak is to the left of the mountain, and Lion’s Head and Signal Hill are to the right of the summit.

This 1000-meter peak, formerly known as Windberg, can be reached on foot. The peak is exposed to a lot of wind and dust, making it easier to climb during the wet, winter months. There are also a number of straightforward walks on the mountain’s lower slopes. However, it is believed that the Saddle between the summit and Table Mountain is the only place from which to ascend the peak safely.

Although living in this stunning area of Cape Town may mean that your cell phone reception is a little lacking, the access to the city’s centre is excellent, the views are worth it on their own, and the stillness at night may even suggest that you don’t need the disturbance.
