Kibler Park, Johannesburg – All You Need To Know

Kibler Park is located in the south of Johannesburg, adjacent to the neighbourhoods of Alveda, Mayfield Park, and Olifantsvlei. It is literally snuggled along the western boundary of the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve.

Kibler Park is not typically associated with the negative connotations associated with living in the southernmost parts of the city, maybe as a result of its proximity to the natural reserve. The southern suburbs are the perfect example of the city’s newest and most vibrant campaign, “You Make Joburg Great,” which emphasizes that the city is about the people, not the attractions. It is true that there is more to do in the northern suburbs, and some of the best clubs and local restaurants are there.

The largest designated nature reserve in the city is Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve. It is one of the best-kept secrets in the city since it has six hiking routes in addition to zebra, black wildebeest, and a variety of birds. And all of this is just 11 kilometres from downtown Johannesburg.

On the second and fourth Sunday of each month, normally, guided rambles and walks are scheduled that take participants along the nine kilometres of trails. The Bloubosspruit, which almost became a dam (the dam wall’s foundations are still there), passes through the park. However, plans were abandoned when the Anglo-Boer War broke out.

19 stone-walled Iron Age towns that date to roughly 1500 are visible from the air. These and other nearby sites imply that a sizable pastoral Tswana people previously called this place home. A replica is planned to be constructed. Since that time, a portion of the reserve served as a Voortrekker farm before being purchased by the city council in 1950 and designated as a nature reserve in 1984.

Thing To Do In Kibler Park

Klipriviersberg Hikes

Its accessibility is what makes Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve such a plus. It is located adjacent to the Mondeor suburb and is about 10 km from the city centre. It’s also not a little area; at over 700 hectares, it offers a variety of topography and wildlife, including zebra, red hartebeest, and black wildebeest. With over 200 kinds of birds and no discernible marsh, it is also well-known as a birding location.

The reserve has 20 km of trails and walks range from relatively easy, flat paths to hard trails that will give you a good workout, including the climb to the highest point (the beacon) in the reserve with clear views over the Johannesburg skyline. Where else can you see a city skyline from a reserve?

The paths are identified by their colours: Bloubos Trail (light blue), Dassie Trail (green), Beacon Trail (yellow), Sunbird Trail (red), Ruins Trail (orange), Kiepersol Trail (brown), Legae Loop Trail (purple), Tswana Loop (pink), Gifbal Trail (black), and Wildebees Trail (lime). The reserve is accessible for self-guided walks and is open daily from dawn to dusk.

On the second and fourth Sunday of each month, guides who are familiar with the area lead guided walks. Additionally, every month’s first and third Wednesdays are designated for led midweek walks. These tours depart from Kibler Park’s Peggy Vera Road entrance (the south side of the reserve). On the third Saturday morning of each month, there are bird walks as well as speciality walks led by experts in various subjects. To learn more, speak to the reserve.

ArtMatters Paint in the Park

To increase public access to art, ArtMatters in Johannesburg sponsors a weekly paint-in-the-park event that is enjoyable and calming. With experienced art instructor Humbu Nsenga on hand to lead you through the creative process, the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve location is ideal for artists and non-artists, kids and adults alike, to release their creativity.

Everyone can benefit from painting since the experience is more important than the finished product: it is calming, therapeutic, and creative. The day is filled with fun, creativity, relaxation, a vacation from the pressures and responsibilities of the fast-paced city life, and even more fun. All painting supplies will be given out.
