Ormonde, Johannesburg – South Africa

In just five minutes from the centre of the bustling city, right south of Gold Reef City and close to its nearest neighbours, Mondeor and Soweto, Ormonde can be found by leaving Marshalltown in the Johannesburg CBD and travelling south-west along the M1.

Ormonde, Johannesburg is a great place to stay if you’re visiting Gold Reef City, Alberton, or need to get to OR Tambo Airport in a hurry. It is a quick 15 minutes along the N12, which lies in a crescent along the southern and eastern suburbs of Johannesburg, and an alternative route into Johannesburg during peak hour traffic. The Earls of Ormonde were Scottish and Irish, respectively.

Ormonde welcomes a fair number of tourists to Johannesburg. In addition to being themed after the local 1880s gold rush, Gold Reef City, a historical amusement park built on a former gold mine, also has a gold mining museum where visitors can learn a lot about the events that shaped Johannesburg. However, the majority of visitors go to the theme park for entertainment which includes the water slides, roller coasters, live performances, “hippodrome,” and casino.

The entire history of apartheid is chronicled in the Apartheid Museum in Ormonde, located at Northern Parkway and Gold Reef Road. The visitor is guided step-by-step through apartheid and into the new South Africa using images, hundreds of hours of television footage, displays, and symbolic symbols spread throughout 22 different exhibition spaces.
