Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden – Johannesburg

The Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden is ideal for individuals who want to get away from Johannesburg’s hustle and bustle without having to drive far. Relax in the presence of various birds and animals near a beautiful waterfall.

The Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden, formerly known as the Witwatersrand National Botanical Garden, is located 30 kilometres west of Johannesburg’s city centre.

With lush green lawns and the chance to see rare bird species, this 300-hectare botanical garden is a lovely respite from the city. Despite the fact that the garden was only established in 1982, the site has been a famous tourist destination for decades.

Visit the Witpoortjie Waterfall in the gardens and attempt to identify the Verreaux’s (black) eagles that nest in the cliffs surrounding the waterfall. In Johannesburg, this is the only known pair of Verreaux’s eagles.

Look for the large collection of lithops, little succulents that resemble small stones and are native to southern Africa, among the 600 plant species growing naturally in the garden. The Cycad Garden and the Succulent Rockery are especially worth visiting because of their various collections of rare and endangered species.

Take a trip around the Roodekrans Ridge to observe the nature reserve and the area’s diverse geology, where you can view a variety of reptiles, antelope, and the occasional jackal. The Visitor Information Centre has a comprehensive inventory of all the plant and animal species found in the gardens.

There are numerous paths and pathways that wind their way through the gardens. Alternatively, spend some time relaxing beside the Sasol Dam. You can go to the bird hide to see some of the 226 bird species that have been documented in the region, and you’ll always be able to locate a tucked-away picnic location somewhere in the Gardens, even when it’s busy.

Take a guided daytime walk for some unique perspectives, or go on guided twilight walks in the spring and summer (book in advance). Concerts are held on a regular basis.

Things To Do

Throughout the year, the gardens hold a variety of activities, including a Spring Fair with thousands of indigenous plants for sale, winter picnic concerts featuring classical and jazz music on alternate Sunday afternoons, and stargazing in early September and October. Tours of the gardens can be arranged, but reservations are required. The adjacent Roodepoort Country Club, which is home to one of South Africa’s largest golf courses, as well as the Roodepoort Museum, are also worth visiting.

What To Pack

You are welcome to bring a picnic to the gardens, but whatever you bring in must be taken out. Because the gardens are best explored on foot, wear comfortable shoes and bring sunscreen, water, and a hat with you.

Best Time To Visit

The best time to visit is spring and summer, when the flowering shrubs are in bloom.
