About Point Waterfront, Durban – South Africa

The Durban Point Waterfront, which is right at the entrance to one of South Africa’s busiest ports, is poised to transform the appearance of the city of Durban, especially now that it has recently received environmental approval for the crucial next phase of development, which will include a divisive small craft harbour at Vetch’s Pier (it took four years for the EIA – Environmental Impact Assessment process, which received much opposition from boating clubs in the area).

The New Point Waterfront construction is sleek, angular, and contemporary. Launched in 2003, it resembles London’s Docklands in many aspects despite being smaller, and the little canal that runs through the already ten finished complexes gives the area a distinct touch of Venice, especially because gondolas can be seen gliding up and down the watery ribbon. It was difficult to comprehend that this region had turned into a sizably deserted, derelict area of Durban’s harbour, prey to undesirable elements of society.

It helps that uShaka Marine World, one of the most popular tourist destinations in the area, is a part of the Durban Point Waterfront. A mixed-use development that will feature hotels, residences, shops, offices, canals, and a boat harbour is the next item on the list. Another sizable shopping centre will also be built as part of the plan to revitalize this area of Durban and make it one of the most prestigious destinations in the city.

From Bell Street to the harbour entrance and from the shoreline to Mahatma Gandhi Road is where Durban Point Waterfront is located (the former infamous Point Road).
