Accra versus Cape Coast – which is preferable?

The controversial comparison of Accra and Cape Coast has always been a large topic between Ghanaians. The city of Accra is the capital of Ghana, while Cape Coast has some of the best schools and holds much of the historic landmarks of the country. Natives of Accra may obviously prefer staying in the capital where everything is accessible. 

Natives of Cape Coast would also prefer the coastal town due to its beautiful beaches, cultural heritage and its rich history.

Accra in perspective

The bustling city of Accra is a place for the ‘hustler’ as people often point out. The city can be harsh and kind, just as a city would be. It is a major hotspot for business, pleasure and commerce. Some of the country’s leading corporations and businesses have their headquarters in the capital. The major ethnic group inhabiting the city are the Ga’s.

Accra is also popular for its busy markets and it’s captivating nightlife. A night out in Accra will leave you wanting to explore even further, from nightclubs, to drinking pubs and even restaurants. The city is also ranked as one of the best when it comes to hospitality and luxurious accommodations. Some of the best hotels are reside in the city, from Kempinski, to the elegant Movenpick Ambassador Hotel, there is a wide range of hotels to choose from.

There are several schools in the capital some of which are of great renown. The Achimota School, Presbyterian Boys Secondary school and Accra Academy are among some of these big schools. The premier university, the University of Ghana, Legon is also located in Accra alongside the Accra Technical University and other important.

The city is littered with several beautiful parks and monuments which were either built to commemorate an important part of the country’s history or to honour the heroic deeds of deserving citizens. Examples of such are the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum a beautiful edifice which holds the last remains of the first president of the Republic of Ghana, the Asomdwee park and the Efua Sutherland park named in honour of one of Ghana’s prolific writers.

Cape Coast in perspective

The historic coastal town of Cape Coast has come a long way from the little fishing community it once was. The town also has a long rich history which spans even before the independence of Ghana. Cape Coast is now the administrative capital of the Central Region of Ghana.

The town was once the capital city of the then Gold Coast colony. It has several beautiful landmarks like the Cape Castle, a fort built by the Europeans who first settled in the area. The town is dominated by the Fantes, a branch of the Akan people. It has an ultra modern market located at Kotokoraba. It is also an education hub and has some of the finest boarding schools the country has, St. Augustine’s College, Mfantsipim School and Wesley Girls.

The choice of which city being more preferable is entirely a question of how much one relates to a place. Some people have lived in Cape Coast and would prefer it die to its significance, peaceful quiet nature and the vast educational opportunities it presents. Others might choose Accra just because it is the capital and it is the center of several businesses and corporations.

No matter the choice you make, the fact that both Accra and Cape Coast are important to the development of the country as a whole. Accra cannot do without Cape Coast and vice versa.
