The Fairmount suburb in Johannesburg, which is east of the M1 and Rosebank, is tucked between the communities of Highlands North, Sandringham, Raedene Estate, and Fairmount Ridge. Athol Street, George Avenue, and Louis Botha Avenue tightly encircle the region, making it reasonably simple to get about the crowded city, especially if the M1 is your escape route.
Fairmount is conveniently located for touring the city because it is almost equally distant from Sandton and Johannesburg downtown. It is also close to Norwood, a hip suburb with pavement-style eateries, coffee shops, a thriving local community, and a retail centre. It’s a terrific spot to eat, especially Grant Avenue, which is brimming with ethnic cuisine from many nations and will tempt you to experience its typical street culture, similar to the pavement cultures of Melville, Parktown, and Greenside.
The once-bustling suburb of Orange Grove, where jazz bars formerly dominated the nightlife scene, is now home to pawn shops and funeral homes. Although you might not want to stroll its pavements nearly as much as you would Norwood, it nevertheless has a certain flavour of what it means to be stylish in Johannesburg.
The posh communities of Saxonwold, Parkwood, Melrose, Parktown North, and Melrose Estate are located on the other side of the M1 near Fairmount. The public park’s man-made lake in the middle is worth seeing, especially on a Saturday morning when rowing a boat there is a great way to see some of Johannesburg’s bird life and the artificial marshland that is fed by the Parktown Spruit.
Locals will be picnicking, strolling dogs, running, and playing with their kids all around you. The park boasts a fantastic restaurant called Moyo, and its Moyo Kids area hosts workshops on the weekends and on public holidays.
