Dunkeld West, Johannesburg – All You Need Know

The upscale neighbourhood of Dunkeld West is located in the gorgeous northern suburbs of Johannesburg, just north of Rosebank, between Melrose and Hyde Park. The streets are broad and tree-lined, the homes are in fundamentally quiet neighbourhoods, the houses are big, and the gardens are peaceful and well-established. This is truly the heart of older Johannesburg.

Just off Jan Smuts Avenue, one of the main thoroughfares in Johannesburg, which runs from the city centre through Rosebank and up to the northern suburbs, is Dunkeld West. The Dunkeld West Centre, known for its Fournos Bakery, is located on this street. On weekends, when its renowned bread, pastries, and deli fare are high on locals’ agendas, it is often bustling with people going out to brunch.

Just a little further along Jan Smuts Avenue, in the direction of the city centre, is Johannesburg’s zoo, which is not far from Dunkeld West. It offers a lovely tranquil environment in which to visit a venue that is now more than 100 years old and is a wonderful respite from the clamour and throng. Children will especially like the amazing reptile enclosure and the night safaris when they can observe owls, bats, and cats.

From Dunkeld West, it is simple to reach both Rosebank Mall and the Hyde Park shopping centre. Both offer a wide variety of stores, boutiques, theatres, and restaurants in a more relaxed setting than the occasionally bustling Sandton City.

Things To Do In Dunkeld West

Fournos Bakery

One of the best things about Fournos is that you can order your dinner and pick it up on the way home. This is a great way to feed the friends you last-minutely invited to supper. Another great thing about Fournos is that it opens at 7 am, making it ideal for breakfast meetings. Finally, their pastries are the best.

The true draw is their deli, which has an amazing array of cheeses, meats, olives, pickles, and other goodies that are just begging to be piled onto your preferred roll, bread, or croissant. Additionally, they serve a variety of salads and meze. With this location, you can’t go wrong for breakfast, tea, or lunch.

Enjoy International Cuisine At DW eleven-13

The magnificent dw eleven-13 in Johannesburg stands out from the competition for its creative approach to fine dining and dedication to giving customers a journey into flavour, texture, and culinary heaven.

The Dunkeld Shopping Centre’s dw eleven-13, which opened in 2009 and is situated at the intersection of Jan Smuts and Bompas Roads, has a well-deserved reputation for serving only the best and most daring flavour combinations. As new and fascinating foodie trends emerge, the menu and the environment are continuously changing and reinventing themselves.

An a-la-carte option, a degustation menu, and a vegetarian tasting option are available. The a-la-carte menu is quite interesting and diversified. Starters include smoked duck, duck confit, langoustine, corn purée, gnocchi, tarragon, velouté sauce, and bacon powder; prawn, avocado, corn sorbet, and poppy seed tuile; seared salmon with ketchup, charred cucumber, apple, salmon roe, and oyster coulis. In the main courses, you can choose from dishes like pork chop with apple, parsley gel, smoked potato, cabbage, and pork jus, kingklip with celeriac, ponzu, orange gel, tempura celery, and miso sauce, or Bonsmara rump with smoked bone marrow, mushroom purée, onion cream, and carrots.

Simply put, the sweets are delicious. Try the brie ice cream with poached pear, pepper crumble, and port gel, the berry sorbet with almond crumble, and meringue, or the chocolate sorbet with peppermint dust and hot fudge sauce if you have a sweet tooth (or two).

The Grazing Room, a division of dw eleven–13, emphasizes the Spanish tapas method of meal preparation. The diners are allowed to move among the prepared plates, tasting the robust flavours and the more delicate undertones of each dish. On occasion, wine tastings are held here.
