Ebenhaezer is a town in South Africa’s Western Cape province’s West Coast District Municipality. In 1831, a German by the name of Wurmb founded a mission station of the Rhenish Missionary Society at the mouth of the Olifants River in the ancient Vanrhynsdorp region.

Olifants River Estuary
The second-most significant estuary in the nation is that of the Olifants River. On South Africa’s West Coast, the little fishing town of Papendorp, is located 250 kilometres north of Cape Town. Since Papendorp is so small, development has little impact on it. There are only two roads in the area; one leads off the R362 and the other leads to the residences of the Ebenhaeser settlement, which are located near the Olifants River. The same route reaches the seashore south of Papendorp as well.
The Olifants River Estuary is home to a variety of animals. These waters are home to 38 fish species from 30 families, as well as 200 bird species, 72 of which are waterbirds and 21 of which are long-distance migrants who arrive during the summer, when the average number of birds nearly doubles to closer to 6,000. Within 9 kilometres of the mouth, 90% of these birds can be found.
Before the 2003 national policy to limit commercial fishing in river estuaries, the Ebenhaeser village on the river’s banks ran a small-scale gill net fishery. Independent studies revealed that small-scale fishing is sustainable, and the locals have been open to participating.
Cape West Coast Biosphere Trails
One of only 6 in South Africa and fewer than 600 worldwide, the Cape West Coast Biosphere Reserve (CWCBR) is a designated UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. It reaches as far as the Atlantic Ocean in the west, the Malmesbury/Moreesberg region in the east, and the Diep River in Milnerton in the south.
Attractions including the West Coast National Park, the town of Darling, the West Coast Fossil Park, fishing villages like Paternoster, lagoons, rivers, flora, and birdlife are located in the reserve’s centre, along with the clear signs of development and an expanding population (biosphere reserves are there essentially to protect plant and animal species whilst also dealing with a growing population and its resource needs).

West Coast National Park
The Langebaan Lagoon, the centrepiece of the West Coast National Park, is located just inland from the remote harbour of Saldanha, a picturesque hour and a half’s drive from Cape Town along the West Coast route.

Rugged scrub explodes into a mosaic of vibrant wildflowers every spring, and the wildlife that calls this home ranges from antelope and predators on land to the magnificent fish, mammals, and sharks of the Atlantic Ocean. The cyan-coloured water of the vast lagoon meets the postcard-perfect white of the sand. This is a land of magic and contrast, where colour, scale, and variety all test your creative abilities.
Near Saldanha Bay and its quiet harbour, the West Coast National Park is located. Due to its breathtaking beauty and the range of watersports it provides, the magnificent Langebaan Lagoon is unquestionably the gem of this treasure trove. The Atlantic Ocean’s tremendous ebb and flow, which crashes against cliffs covered in giant mussel shells or laps slowly onto the sandy coasts, is only a few kilometres away from the lagoon.
