Edgemead, Northern Suburbs – Cape Town

Bellville is thought to include the residential neighbourhood of Edgemead, which is located north of Cape Town’s downtown at the base of the Tygerberg hills. The leafy village is a sought-after suburb for residents of Cape Town and a popular place to stay, especially given that it is so close to the Durbanville Wine Route, which is quickly rising to the top of South Africa’s wine regions. The village is only 20 km from town and has easy access to the N1.

Edgemead may have had modest beginnings as a first-time homebuyer-friendly suburb in the 1970s, but today it is a highly sought-after neighbourhood in a location that has benefited from early restrictions in the title deeds that included no overhead telephone or electricity wires and no trees to be cut down without permission. The result is that today this is a green, garden suburb with open spaces and sought-after properties, particularly as investment opportunities. Even advertising was strictly regulated.

One of the main attractions for Edgemead is the Grand West Casino in Goodwood. The renowned casino features an Olympic-sized ice rink, a children’s entertainment area, and a variety of restaurants, pubs, clubs, and stores that are decorated in the style of old Cape Town.

Tygervalley and Canal Walk, both accessible from Edgemead, further elevate this as a thrilling shopping destination, placing retail at the centre of a trip to Cape Town. This is the city’s retail hub.
