The Asantehene, King of the Ashanti Kingdom, has his official house and traditional home in the Manhyia Palace.
The late King Opoku Ware II had the palace built and commissioned in 1995. The former Palace, which was erected in 1995, was converted into a museum that houses the artefacts, records, and history of all the past Asante Kings after the building and commissioning of the Palace.
The Manhyia Palace, Ghana’s largest palace, has a wide courtyard with statues of all the Asante kingdom’s past famous kings and queens, and is also recognized as one of the best traditional palaces in the subregion.
Apart from serving as the formal seat of the Asantehene, Otumfour Osei Tutu, since its completion in 1995, the Manhyia Palace has also been a popular tourist destination, attracting thousands of visitors from all over the world each year.
Tourists are able to enter the former palace, which is now a museum where they may learn about the Ashanti Kingdom’s history. The Asante Kingdom continues to care for and maintain the Museum (previously the palace), which is located next to the Palace.
Main Purpose Of the Manhyia Palace
The Kings’ office was located in this palace. From 1925 to 1974, it was the administrative seat of the Asante Nation, until Otumfuo Opoku Ware II moved to his new palace. The museum houses a number of artifacts.
Who built The Old Manhyia Palace
It not only contains the Museum’s displays, but it is itself a museum exhibit. When Asantehene Agyeman Prempeh I returned from the Seychelles after twenty-eight years in exile, the British Colonial Government erected it for him as his private palace in 1925.
