Teshie Area – All You Need To Know

Welcome to Teshie, Accra, one of the best areas in Accra to stay. It is famous for its development and it has been one of top Ga settlements for centuries. Arguable, Teshie is a must-see destination in Accra. In this article, I will outline all you need to know about Teashie.

History

The town is a coastal town in the Ledzokuku Municipal District of southeastern Ghana’s Greater Accra Region. With a population of 171,875 inhabitants, Teshie is Ghana’s eighth-most populous settlement.

Teshie is one of the Ga State’s independent towns, and it hosts the Homowo festival every August. The original Teshie inhabitants are thought to have come from La, a town to the west of Teshie.

Fort Augustaborg, built by the Danes in 1787 and occupied by the British from 1850 to 1957, is located in Teshie. The town is thought to be 300 years old as of 2011.

As a result of the country’s current democracy and development policy, the town is diverse.

The Teshie Road runs from East to West, from the Kpeshie Lagoon to Teshie-Nungua Estates (first intersection). Teshie has developed to become one of Ghana’s most populous cities.

Facts About Teshie

This implies that the majority of properties are family houses, meaning that they have been passed down through the generations and are rarely available for rent. Fishermen and fishmongers, traders, drivers, and office employees make up the mixed-income population. Housing is a combination of old, pre-colonial buildings and more modern structures, with the majority being compound houses.

Due to poor drainage, the regions are poorly planned and crowded during the rainy season (April-July and September-November). Basic services such as water and electricity are available, and supplies are consistent. On request, telephone lines can be provided. Post offices, internet cafés, schools (creche, nursery, primary, junior secondary, and senior secondary), including the Teshie Orphanage, stores, booksellers, banks, police stations, and the Teshie and Nungua marketplaces are all located in Teshie and Nungua, respectively.

These regions also have churches and mosques, as well as a vibrant nightlife. Teshie and Nungua are also known for the canoes, fish, leopards, vehicles, houses, Bibles, and a variety of other patterns carved into coffins by Ga carpenters. The ornate and colorful coffins unmistakably honor a person’s life’s work and accomplishments (a fisherman, for example, would be buried in a fish-shaped coffin), while also declaring the family’s importance and fortune.

Teshie is home to the Ghana Military Academy, which is just a short walk from the famed Next Door Beach Resort on Beach Road, one of Accra’s most prominent entertainment venues. The Teshie-Nungua Estates, which date from the early 1970s and feature houses and apartments, are located between Teshie and Nungua. However, there are severe water shortages here, and residents require water storage tanks. Most portions of the city are accessible through trotros and taxis. However, traffic is extremely congested, especially in the weeks leading up to and around holiday seasons like Christmas and Easter.
