Waterfall, Valley of 1000 Hills – Durban

With its location just over 30 kilometres outside of Durban, north of Kloof and next to Hillcrest and Forest Hill, Waterfall is practically a suburb of Hillcrest. And being on the edges of the city is the biggest benefit of staying in Waterfall, Durban. The second, more obvious benefit is that it is always cooler outside than in the city. While still being close to all one still needs for convenience, Waterfall is far enough from city life to allow one to “leave” it. Consequently, Waterfall serves as a haven while yet providing you with creature comforts.

The area’s relatively lush, farm-like atmosphere serves to further support the idea that the suburb’s name suggests the presence of a body of water nearby. Similar to Kloof, the region has a lot of trees, which attracts a variety of birds. The vicinity of the Krantzkloof Nature Reserve adds another green space, giving the area a rural atmosphere.

If you don’t have specific plans to spend time in Durban itself, staying in Waterfall won’t leave you bored or without things to do. The Midlands Meander is nearby, and the settlements of Kloof and Hillcrest are both worthwhile stops.

Particularly Hillcrest has developed from a tranquil small town to a very busy suburb of the city—people frequently commute. Gated neighbourhoods and contemporary townhouse developments thereby obliterate the earlier farm-type lifestyle.

If you’re looking for a getaway, visit the Krantzkloof Nature Reserve, a 530-hectare area covered with amazing forest, coastal forest, and grasslands where you can see a variety of animals and incredible bird life. You can also visit Kloof’s Botanical Gardens, which are now on the grounds of a lodge and offer guided tours.
