Tourist Site in Western Region – Ankasa Conservation Area

Western Region of Ghana is one of the must-visit destinations in Africa to experience the beauty of nature. It an integrated complex of beautiful safe beaches, highest tropical jungles; numerous mines, and picturesque villages. One of the must-visit nature destinations in the Western Region is the Ankasa Conservation Area.

Ankasa conservation area is one of the largest forest reserves in West Africa. The area has been strongly protected by Ghana since the 1950s when the decision was made to make the area a forest reserve and has been protected from human activities like logging and hunting.

Ankasa Conservation Area is a twin Wildlife Protected Area comprising Nini-Suhien National Park and the Ankasa Resource Reserve. It is about 500km2 situated. Among a large number of reserves in Ghana, Ankasa conservation area consists of tropical evergreen forests and is the area with the highest rainfall in Ghana throughout the year, making it the best place for wildlife.

Being the area with the highest rainfall in Ghana, Ankasa is the richest forest in terms of botanical diversity in the Country. About three hundred (300) plant species have been recorded in a single hectare. Notable among the plant is Makore, Dahoma, and Khaya. Ankasa is home to many well-known plants.

The wildlife population of the forest is over 180 species of birds and 630 species of butterflies, whiles animals like elephants, monkeys, chimpanzees, and leopards can also be found in their numbers in the park.

Other Attractions at Ankasa conservation area

Within the area, there are other attractions you would love to experience. This includes the popular Suhien River which flows through the forest and also forms a beautiful waterfall. You can also enjoy picnic and camping with your family and friends at the Nini-Suhien National park. The park cover over 180km2 out of the 500km2 of the entire conservation. The area is open to tourists and hosts about thousands of local and international tourists every year.

How to Get to Ankasa conservation area

Ankasa conservation is located in the Western Region of Ghana, close to Axim and near the Ghana and Cote d’ Ivoire border. It is 356 kilometers away from Accra (the nation’s capital).
