The peaceful and leafy Glenmore neighbourhood, which should not be confused with the South Coast beach town of Glenmore Beach, is located southwest of the city centre of Durban, next to the neighbourhood of Glenwood, below the ridge from the lovely University of Natal grounds, and across Berea Road from the Berea.
It is primarily a residential area and has a cosy ambience free of commercial and traffic-related noises. It is easy minutes from anything in Durban because of its convenient location in the middle of the city, between Glenwood and Westville, and easy access to the main bus routes to the city centre, beaches, and many major freeways.
The rugby and cricket stadiums are easily accessible, the International Convention Centre and Exhibition Centers are only a short drive from the city, and The Pavilion Shopping Center, which offers hours of shopping and entertainment value, is only a short drive up the western motorway, the N3.
Glenmore Beach
On the lower portion of KwaZulu-Hibiscus Natal’s Coast, Glenmore Beach is a component of four communities: Trafalgar Beach, Palm Beach, Munster, and Glenmore Beach. Despite having a similar geographic location, each of them has a few tiny differences and its own special charm. The swimming and surfing area in Munster is Glenmore Beach. Two rivers, the Itongasi to the south and the Mkhandandlovu to the north, divide the beaches of Munster and Glenmore.
It is impossible to avoid the natural splendour that the expansive coastline offers. The beach is one of the most beautiful in the area, with extensive stretches of unspoiled sand, rich vegetation, scatted rocks, rocky outcrops, and grass-covered banks. It is a favourite destination for fishing competitions and beauty pageants and is a paradise for surfing, sea kayaking, and fishing. The Nightingale Shipwreck, which came aground here in 1933, is among the area’s other attractions. At low tide, the cylinder and boiler from the ship can still be seen on the nearby rocks. The Glenmore 4×4 circuit provides hours of entertainment for thrill seekers and features over 30 obstacles.
The mouth of the Itongasi River provides a boat launch facility, and dolphins and whales visit the waters between April and October. The beach also offers shark-protected waters. On weekends and during the holidays, lifeguards are on duty.
