Ghana Passport Online Launched
Since March 2020, Ghana’s online passport application system has become the only way to apply for a Ghanaian passport in the country.
The old process was very stressful for applicants. One has to be in line almost all day and can’t even start the process till the end of the day. Ghana Passport application took an online when the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Launched an online application service for Ghanaians to ease the mode of the application whiles ensuring maximum security for applicants.

Things You Need To Apply Ghana Passport Online
First Time Applicants
- Birth Certificate ( proof of Ghanaian citizenship). Apply for Birth Certificate online
- Document to support identity such as Driver’s License, National ID card.
- ‘Proof of Profession ( An introductory letter from the applicant’s employer that is if the applicant is currently employed or a work ID card that bears the applicant’s name, organization’s name and position. A student ID if the applicant is currently schooling. Homemakers/housewives and applicants that are unemployed and those in the non-formal sectors of employment like mechanics, hairdressers, seamstresses, traders, etc. do not need any proof. Registered Business owners and self-employed applicants much produce their business registration certificate as proof)

- First page and bio-data page with pictures and information page
- Valid Visa if the applicant has any in old Passport
- Last Page
- Proof of Profession if changed
Type of Ghana Passport
There are two main type of Ghana Passport Application. The first one is the Expedited Application which is popularly called ‘’Express’’ and second type is the Standard Application that will take a little longer time to get it. Applications has a 32 booklet page and a 48 booklet page.

How To Apply For Ghana Passport Online

- Create an account on the Application Portal
- Visit the Ghana Passport Application Portal at https://passport.mfa.gov.gh. Click on sign up to create a new account if you are new on the Website. Verify the account ( after following the step by step process after clicking on the sign up) by entering the SMS code you will receive in the confirmation box.
- Start a new Ghana Passport Application
Login to the portal with the detail you used in creating the account ( Username and Password). Click on the start new Application and make payment for the processing fee. One can make payment by choosing a bank option, the choosing an application type (standard or expedited), and the payment channel to make the payment. After a successful payment process, the form in insured into your account to continue with the passport application process. The forms can be seen at My Application
- Fill and complete the application form with the right details
After clicking on My Application section on your portal, click on the application and start to fill in all required details. Make sure you confirm all the information is accurate, sigh the declaration forms.
- Book an appointment date to visit the Passport Application office or center
It is best to select the passport applications center nearest to you or the one you most prefer. Once your are done, book a date you will like to go to the center for verification of your documents and to take your biometric details ( photograph and fingerprints). You can print the final document and take to your guarantor to fill while you wait for your appointment date.
- Visit the Passport Application Center or Office
After all the online process and signed forms, you can now present yourself on the appointment date to the center you chose. Your document will be verified and your biometric details will also be taken. After your appointment, the center will indicate to you when your application or passport will be ready for collection.
- Collect Your Ghana Passport
One will receive SMS from the number used through the process when the passport is ready for collection. After receiving this message, you will have to visit the center selected by you for your Ghana Passport.

There was only 5 online Passport Application Centers in Ghana. Now there are 11 application centers in the country that take care of online applications.
One can select any of them during the application process and you will go there for your biometric and receiving of the passport when it is done.

How To Get Your Ghana Passport Online Fast
The Government of Ghana has introduced the premium service for Ghana passport since 2019 to make the process very faster. It was after the passport form was made free online available to download and fill.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has commissioned a fast-track application process office know as the Premium Passport. The process center is at the Accra Digital Center (Contact: +23330378399 for directions).
Before one can use this Premium service, applicants will go through the usual vetting and the passport applications. They will fill the form online ( as described in this post).
One will be given a date to go to the office. You will pay Ghc60.00 and the process will be underway.
Applicant will receive a confirmation text from Ghana passport application center on the process of your passport. Then you can visit the center for your passport.
Price for Premium Ghana Passport
Surely the premium will be extract expensive then the normal one. But it’s in a normal range. In total one will pay:
- Ghc160.00 for the Standard Premium Application ( 32 Booklet page).
- Ghc210 for the Express Premium Application ( 32 Booklet page).
Things To Know Before Applying For Ghana Passport
- The online process is now the only way to apply for a Ghana Passport.
- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has reviewed upwards, the price of the various passport service. ( this post is updated to reflect).
- All passport application centers in Ghana now support the online application. The manual way of applying for Ghana Passport will no longer work. This is since March 2020.
- The passport application center has confirmed that they don’t accept laminated birth certificates.
- ‘There have been lots of report of delay at the Kinbu passport applications center so it’s best to choose the Premium center at Accra Digital Center.
- By paying an additional Ghc50.00, you can have your passport delivered at your home.
- ‘The banks in Ghana are no longer selling passport forms.
