The twin cities of Sekondi and Takoradi make up Sekondi-Takoradi, a city in Ghana. It is the capital of Ghana’s Western Region and the Sekondi – Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly. With a population of 445,205 inhabitants, Sekondi-Takoradi is the region’s largest metropolis and an industrial and economic hub.
Timber, cocoa processing, plywood, shipbuilding, port and railway repair, and, more recently, sweet crude oil and crude oil, are the main industries of Sekondi-Takoradi. Fishing is the most important job in Sekondi-Takoradi. The main railway lines to Kumasi and Accra pass through Sekondi-Takoradi.

History Of Sekondi-Takoradi
Dutch Fort Orange (1642) and English Fort Sekondi were built in Sekondi, an older and larger Ahanta town (1682). It benefited from a train built in 1903 that connected it to mineral and forestry resources in the hinterland. Takoradi, an Ahanta town, was the site of Dutch Fort Witsen (1665) and is home to Ghana’s first deepwater port, established in 1928. RAF Takoradi was an important staging location for British aircraft bound for Egypt during World War II.
Spitfire fighter planes were sent in crates from England to Takoradi, Ghana, where they were constructed before being flown to Libya through Nigeria and Sudan. During World War II, 26 Squadron SAAF was located in Takoradi, flying anti-submarine and convoy protection operations over the Atlantic. The Takoradi European Public Cemetery has the graves of a number of South African pilots. In 1946, the two cities merged. The city became the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sekondi–Takoradi on November 20, 1969.
Due to the large discovery of oil in the Western area, the city is now known (though not officially) as the Oil City of Ghana, and it has attracted massive migration from people all over the world. In 2010, the Sekondi-Takoradi metro area had a population of 248,680 individuals, 148,000 of whom were indigenous Ahanta people, 30,000 from the central region of Ghana, 60,000 from other regions of Ghana, and 10,000 foreign nationals.

Sekondi Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly
The Sekondi Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly is one of Ghana’s 261 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), and is one of the Western Region’s 14 MMDAs.
Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis is located in the Western Region’s south-eastern corner. As a result, it is the tiniest, but it is also the most developed. It is, in fact, Ghana’s third-largest metropolitan area. Sekondi-Takoradi is the Metropolitan’s administrative capital.
The Konsaworado runs towards the Buthia lagoon at Takoradi Polytechnic, producing a large, scenic marshland. Between Ekuase and Takoradi is the Essei lagoon. It’s on the coast, some 200 kilometers west of Accra.
Ahanta West Municipal borders the Metropolis on the west, and Shama District on the east. The Atlantic Ocean is to the south of the Metropolis, and Wassa East District is to the north. The Metropolis has a total area of 191.7 km2.
According to the 2021 population and housing census, the Metropolis’ population is 104,837, with 51,734 males and 53,103 females.

The Metropolitan Assembly of Sekondi Takoradi is one of the fourteen districts of Ghana’s Western Region. It was previously a part of the then-larger Shama Ahanta East Metropolitan District, which was formed in 1988 from the former Sekondi Takoradi Metropolitan Authority Council, until the eastern part of the district was split off to form Shama District on February 29, 2008, and the remaining portion was renamed Sekondi Takoradi Metropolitan District. However, on March 15, 2018, the district’s western half was broken off to become the Effia Kwesimintsim Municipal District, leaving the rest as Sekondi Takoradi Metropolitan District. Sekondi-Takoradi is the capital of the metropolis, which is located in the southeast section of the Western Region.
