Takoradi Technical University is a public tertiary education institution (university) located in Sekondi-Takoradi,the capital of the Western Region of Ghana.
The university was founded in September 2016 as a result of the government’s policy of converting Takoradi Polytechnic, as well as five other Polytechnics, to Technical University level. Takoradi Technical University (previously Takoradi Polytechnic) has operated as a Government Technical Institute under the Ministry of Education’s Ghana Education Service since April 1954.
During that time, the institute primarily offered Craft and Technician Certificate programs in commercial and technical areas, with Royal Society of Arts (RSA) and City and Guilds of London, United Kingdom, as awarding bodies. The Ghana Education Service, however, took over the awarding of the above-mentioned certifications in 1990.
The Polytechnic Act 321 (PNDC Law 1993) upgraded the Takoradi Technical Institute and five other comparable schools to become part of the Ghana Tertiary Education System as part of the Ghana Educational Reforms that began in the 1980s. In the 1993/1994 academic year, the Polytechnics began offering Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes, as required by law. The polytechnics were required to complement the role of universities in increasing access to tertiary education for the training of medium and higher-level workforce under these reforms.
With the President’s consent, a Bill presented by the Ministry of Education and discussed by the Cabinet of Government in 2014 was passed by Parliament as an Act in August 2016, turning select polytechnics into full-fledged technical universities. As a result, the Takoradi Polytechnic Council chose the name “Takoradi Technical University,” which was duly registered with the Ghanaian Registrar General’s Department.
Effia Kuma (Takoradi), Butumagyebu (Sekondi), and Akatakyi are the three (3) campuses of Takoradi Technical University (Agona-Nkwanta). With a total area of 152.3 acres, the Akatakyi Campus is the largest of the three.
