Whether you’re a seasoned traveler seeking a new adventure or a budget-conscious explorer, this guide will show you how to unlock the treasures of Ghana while keeping your wallet happy. Get ready to embark on an unforgettable journey that showcases the beauty, diversity, and affordability of this incredible West African destination.

Is Ghana Expensive?

Everyone travels in different ways, thus I can’t say how much you could spend to visit Ghana. Compared to other visitors, your travel budget in Ghana may be higher or lower. However, I can’t predict how much you would spend each day if you were in Ghana.

Depending on where you want to stay while traveling to Ghana, it may be more affordable than usual. Although getting around in Accra or Kumasi can be a touch pricey, it won’t spoil your travel plan as your currency rate can help especially if you are coming from Europe.

If you travel on a budget you can survive on around USD 20 per day or even less, depending on what you will be doing during the day or where you will eat.

Cedi is the official currency of Ghana. Since some people might not accept or even understand the dollar, you should exchange or convert your money into cedis. It is essential to seek someone you know for the best converting offer in town even though every bank or forex can convert it for you. As a result of the reduced conversion rate, I advise you to change your currency to Cedi.

Budget Hotels And Hostels

The cost of a hotel room in Ghana is from $40 to $60 per night on average but can exceed $100 in major cities like Accra. Although not well-known, Ghana features a number of hostels with nightly rates as low as $20 US. For a reasonable price, Accra’s Somewhere Nice provides access to the pool, Wi-Fi, and breakfast. There are both shared and private accommodations. Though many hostels accept reservations upon arrival, we suggest making reservations in advance.

Most tourists are familiar with how to find affordable lodging wherever. Here are some examples to aid your planning if you are new to finding accommodations within your means.

Couchsurfing.com is another best option if you are a budget traveler. Make sure you read some reviews before selecting a host. You can also make some new friends online and ask if they will let you stay at their place when you visit. If you can get a friend, don’t forget to tip them when leaving.

Use Trotro As A Means Of Transport For Inter-city Rides

Uber and Bolt are popular transportation options in Ghana, and although the cost of each journey may first appear inexpensive, it soon adds up. Take minibusses (“tro-tros”) to travel inside and between Ghanaian cities, as the natives do. Tro-tros run practically continuously throughout the day, have fixed prices, and a 30-minute ride can cost as little as C3 (US$0.30). Please use exact change while making payments.

Join Group Tours For Other Regions Visit

In Ghana, group excursions are popular, and they let visitors explore several areas for less money overall than the total of the parts. Popular locations include Cape Coast, where the horrifying fortifications that previously housed slaves are still present, and Eastern Ghana, where the Boti Waterfalls and Aburi Botanical Gardens are the top attractions.

These excursions typically include lodging, transportation, meals, and a photographer who will document the journey with photos. It’s also a terrific chance to meet locals and other tourists to join a group trip.

Enjoy Or Eat At Local Chop Bars And Street Food Joints

In Ghana, you can get some of the tastiest food on the street, and it’s frequently extremely cheap. Chop Bars are one of several neighborhood restaurants delivering delectable, freshly prepared food. (In Ghana, the word “chop” refers to eating, and bars are typical locations where Ghanaians congregate to eat.)

The average price of street food with meat in Ghana is between GHc15 and GHc25 for a medium-sized plate of the country’s delectable jollof rice. You can get away with ordering soup-based, meatless items for about $0.40 US. Chop bars also allow patrons to avoid the pricey taxes that are frequently added to restaurant bills.

How To Spend On Meals

Some of these luxury restaurants don’t even sell expensive food, you can get a meal for just USD15 at a luxury restaurant. You can easily be full after eating one plate, so restaurant food here in Ghana doesn’t cost much.

If you are bored with some international cuisines you can try some of our local cuisines like fufu, Ampasi, waakye, or even Gari and more. You can ask the seller what they are made of and they will be very happy to explain everything to you.

However, if you looking to try some local cuisines you can pay $2 or $3 more to have the seller deliver your food with a drink to the table.

Visit Ghana At The Right Time

Even though I have to encourage people to visit Ghana in December but then it might be a little pricey for budget travelers. Due to the constant celebrations taking place all around Ghana, December is one of the greatest times to visit. At the end of the year, tourists from all over the world, including members of the Ghanaian diaspora, swarm to the nation to take part in the country’s all-night parties, seasonal festivals, and theme-based daytime events. Unfortunately, all of this enjoyment comes at a cost because prices generally go up during the holiday season. Budget-conscious visitors should plan their trips for off-peak months like February to April.

Book Your Flight In Advance

Buying your flight ticket three to six months in advance can be a good strategy to potentially secure better deals, but the ideal booking time can vary depending on several factors. While it’s generally true that booking well in advance can help you find lower fares for popular destinations, it is also good to know when you should visit.

Use Big Buses For Regional Travels

Visitors can travel around Ghana safely and at a fraction of the cost of domestic flights by taking the STC or VIP bus. For instance, a round-trip flight from Accra to Tamale on PassionAir can cost GHc1300, yet STC or VIP buses only cost GHc220. Even if taking the bus takes longer than taking a short trip, the views from your bus seat are much more interesting than those you’d receive from the air. simultaneously saving money and the environment!

Set Budget For Attractions Visiting

In Ghana, attractions are either free, have predetermined modest prices, or operate on tips. One of Ghana’s most well-liked tourist destinations, Black Star Square, may be visited for free. The majority of attractions have defined admission prices, however, they are affordable: a non-Ghanaian visitor’s entry to Kakum National Park costs only GHc30

While some locations provide free tours, the venue or tour guide does appreciate donations. The Pikworo Slave Camp in the North is a recognized location with educated local guides who will give you a tour and then ask you for what you want in exchange. In this situation, decide how much you want to tip and stick to that budget. For most tips, GHc20 to GHc50 is a reasonable range.

Stroll The Markets For Cheap Souvenirs

In Ghana, the Art Center is regarded as one of the greatest places to purchase handcrafted goods and other souvenirs. These markets, which can be found all across the nation, are made up of stalls filled to the brim with clothing, keychains, purses, wall art, furniture, and other items. The merchants will quote prices at three times the market rate because they are aware that visitors are there to make purchases.

You can purchase many of the same products for less at Ghana’s numerous unauthorized markets. Ghana has a vibrant culture of bartering, so be ready to put your talents to the test. Never accept the first quoted price; instead, make your initial counteroffer half of the initial offer made by the merchant. You’ll almost certainly bargain more after that, but you’ll eventually agree on a price that pleases both parties, and you’ll also get to experience a wonderful cultural exchange.

Budget Travel Tips For Ghana

  • Staying in local guesthouses and moving around in Trotro instead of Taxis or Online-taxis can save you a lot of money
  • If you want to spend less money on food, consider eating some street foods or stands and local restaurants. Keep an eye out for stands or street foods with most people, they’re usually the best.
  • For inter-region travels avoid domestic flights and use the VIP TRANSPORTS SYSTEMS, there is plenty of legroom for your comfort.
  • There are some corners where product prices may be expensive but try to negotiate for less price and when you think it’s too expensive, turn around and pretend you leaving, the owner will call you to come back for a cheaper offer.

Packing Tips For Ghana (What to Pack)

Are you getting ready for your trip to Ghana, but wondering what to pack? Here are some packing tips for things to bring with you on your journey.

  • Bring a baseball cap or a hat, because the sun can get hot some things.
  • Make sure you have a comfortable travel backpack or a sturdy travel suitcase.
  • Ghana also uses European-style outlets. But is also best to get a nice African-wear when you get here.
  • Sneakers and slippers will be very comfortable.

Internet & Cell Phone Service In Ghana

There are many cell phone providers in Ghana, I might not recommend all but the best are MTN, Vodafone, AirtelTigo, and Glo. These are the best cell phone service you can get in Ghana.

Of all, MTN has the best coverage and you can get service everywhere you visit in Ghana, but it might be a little expensive.

Getting a SIM card in Ghana is very simple, they are sold on the street. Anywhere you find a vendor, you can ask for a SIM card and they will help you out with registration and teach you how to use it.

You can get a sin card for less than a dollar.

Challenges To Be Aware Of When You Visit Ghana.

It can get very busy in Accra. There will be a lot of traffic during working hours, so avoid using online taxis and use Trotro to move around.

Make sure you have everything in your small handbag, money, phone, and other important thing you will need. Pickpocketing is everywhere in the World and Ghana is no exception.
