Many Ghanaians know Nogokpo as the name of a legendary deity who lives in Ghana’s Volta region. Is the name however, limited to that?
Nogokpo is a small village in the Volta region’s Ketu South Municipal, located along the Trans-West African Coastal Highway. Because of the presence of a well-known shrine in the town, the little village is one of Ghana’s most well-known.
The shrine was brought to the village after a heated misunderstanding between the townsfolk and their then-chief, Torgbui, in the early 1900s, according to mythology and historians of the towns. Since then, the shrine has served as their spiritual protector, providing protection from bad spirits as well as resolving disputes and providing justice to those who have been wronged.
Stealing is nearly non-existent in the little town due to the dread of being harshly punished by the shrine’s gods, especially in cases when the victim consults the shrine and demands that the thief or culprit be severely punished.
While the town may not be a popular tourist destination due to the horror it inspires in visitors, a few brave souls make the trip to Nogokpo on occasion to have a closer look at the shrine that scares everyone, young and old, rich and poor.
