History of Takoradi Airport
The US Army Air Forces Air Transport Command Trans-Africa Ferry Route was a major transportation link between the Atlantic Ocean port of Lagos in Nigeria and the Sudan during World War II. And was one of the main routes for Lend-Lease aircraft sent to Russia, as well as other supplies sent to British forces in Egypt and the Middle East.
Imperial Airways had pioneered the route in 1936, but it was greatly expanded during WWII.
Between Robertsfield, the airport the US built to serve Liberia’s capital Monrovia, and Apapa Airport, Nigeria, Takoradi Airport was an important refueling stop. The Royal Air Force station known as “RAF Takoradi” was utilized at Takoradi Airport to assemble crated aircraft that had been carried over the Atlantic before being flown to active zones in North Africa.
During World War II, 26 Squadron SAAF was located in Takoradi, flying Vickers Wellington bombers on anti-submarine and convoy protection patrols across the Atlantic. The Takoradi European Public Cemetery, which is adjacent to the airport, is home to a number of South African Air Force airmen.
